Sérendipité
Past: March 10 → April 7

Past: January 14 → March 3
Oblique forms, diagonals, and shadowy triangular zones all surge up here and there. In the photographs, the lines of architecture intensified by lines of shadow increase the depth of the background. The drawing is outlined in the image, while abstract forms coming from the photographs appear in the drawings.

Gorgona
Past: June 9 → July 30, 2011
The works making up this exhibition at Galerie Frank Elbaz spotlight a distinctive avant-garde within the Croatian and European context during the second half of the 20th century. Gorgona was no conventional group of artists. In Zagreb in the late 1950s the painters Julije Knifer, Marijan Jevsovar, Duro Seder and Josi…

Bernard Piffaretti — Bande annonce
Past: May 7 → June 4, 2011
Going to a Bernard Piffaretti exhibition first of all involves addressing a series of “painterly situations”. These, as the viewer will have no trouble in recognising, represent the modernist abstraction whose codes and components have been gradually defined in the course of the last century : a set of motifs and structures.

Justine Kurland — He sleeps where he falls
Past: April 2 → May 4, 2011
In this series, photographed during a nine-month road trip, living in a van with her 6-year-old son, Justine Kurland focuses on nomadic subcultures: train-hoppers, hitchhikers, wilderness squatters, wayfarers, and drifters. Her work draws upon the nineteenth-century landscape tradition of depicting a perfect place.

Des années de poudre recouvrant des années de jaune
Past: February 26 → March 26, 2011
Sara Barker, Jesus Alberto Benitez and Mélanie Blaison pay particular attention to the presence of material. The exhibition takes place on the edge of sculpture, when it subsides and becomes almost a model or a drawing of itself. The object then becomes pictorial…

Ari Marcopoulos — This Week
Past: January 8 → February 19, 2011
Except for one, the images in the show were all taken in 2010 they present my most recent work. They are a slow quest for abstraction combined with a straight portrait of a friend. The Sistine Chapel as a halfpipe. The spiderbite as minor injury a recurring subject in my work. Most important in my work are the latest photos.

Kaz Oshiro — Home Anthology
Past: September 4 → October 23, 2010
Kaz Oshiro’s “Home Anthology” show at Frank Elbaz brings together commonplace objects and American cultural emblems in a weird domestic ballet. A trashcan off the street, pigeonholes from an office: such everyday consumer items from a megalopolis like Los Angeles are the kind of things we no longer even notice, yet each tiny detail has a slice of life to recount.
